With the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Fatih Municipality, The Independent Art Foundation presents the 4^th International Istanbul Triennial; ‘’Borders and Walls As Heterotopic Spaces’’. The Triennial will be held in May 2022 as outdoor and indoor events and exhibitions curated by Hülya Yazıcı and Filiz Ağdemir at Yedi-Kule Fortress Museum (Yedikule Dungeons).

The Istanbul’s multi-layered history   and its sociological, political, cultural, economic coexistence and spatial transformations allow us to define the boundaries (and walls) of its urban sites as heterotopic spaces. In this regard, through its transformation, temporality, multiplicity and independency, the 4 ^th Triennial;  ‘Borders and Walls’ embodies the encounter of different social stratifications and conflicts in the city.

The 4^th International Istanbul Triennial aims to open up a space where the Istanbul’s heterotopic spaces; its borders (and walls) can be discussed and repositioned as the anti-spaces. By doing so, the exhibition divides the space into fragments yet protects its entirety.

The 4^th International Istanbul Triennial will welcome the various works of art (installations-sound and light, videos, sculpture, performance) that are suitably produced or renovated in order to meet the outdoor conditions of the historic and cultural sites of the exhibition venue.

In addition to the exhibition program attended by international artists, the 4^th International Istanbul Triennial will host various workshops, performances, night tours and talks
